“My name is Joe Miller. I am 18 years old and live in Silver City, IA. I have always been a huge Sports fan, Avid golfer, and all-around active kid. I was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma on August 21st, 2021. Just after the first day of sophomore year. Little did I know I was in for a lengthy fight. A fight that would make me an all-around better person. Also, a fight that would bring me to inspire and change other people’s lives the best I can. August 27th, 2021, is when I would have my first resection. My mother and I would end up staying 87 days in the hospital through countless treatments after that. Of course, I had some very rough nights, but I knew everything was going to be ok. I grew up in a family where thick skin was the norm. So, I refuse ever to back down or quit. I believe that God makes things happen for a reason. I wouldn’t take back my diagnosis for anything. It made me a better person, taught me things I would never have to learn, and most of all, put things in perspective – through countless treatments over the years and 24 major surgeries. I was invited in July of 2023 to go to New York for The Sunshine Kids trip. I met lots of great people, did lots of fun things, and had the experience of a lifetime. The Sunshine Kids trip to New York allowed me to make memories that I’ll never forget. I am incredibly honored and blessed to have been chosen for the role of 2024 Spokeskid. Thank you for giving me this amazing chance and opportunity to inspire others through my story.”- Joe Miller, a Sunshine Kid
